Due to popular demand, we have created an OpenVZ OS template based on Centos6 x86_64 that has ownCloud v 4.5 installed with a default version of Apache, PHP5 and SQLite.

Current, or new users can select this template from SolusVM under the “Re-Install” tab. Once completed, all you need to do is login via ssh, start Apache with “service httpd start” command and point your browser to the IP address of your VPS.

Some of the benefits of hosting your own cloud for files (like ownCloud) include:

Full control of your files

Secure server which you have root access to

Privacy

Eliminate DropBox

More professional

Keep your digital rights to photos

What does ownCloud allow me to do?

For starters, you can use it as a secure replacement for DropBox, and you can even password protect the URL’s you send to other users in-case the file is sensitive in nature.

You can upload any kind of file (up to 512MB per file) and access it from the web, through WebDAV, the ownCloud iPhone App, and the Mac OS X/Windows Desktop App.

It is a music player and video streamer (with supported addon enabled).

Bottom Line

You can have full control of your files, share them with your friends or collaborate with your clients if you are a small/medium business owner in a very simple tool.

The benefit of using it on an OpenVZ.ca based VPS, is that you can scale resources as you grow. Start out with the Small VPS package and go beyond the storage of ExtraLarge as you need it.

The network is currently in the testing phases as we await cross connects to be completed. Over the coming month, we will be deploying new Intel E5 based VPS nodes for Large and Extra Large VPS accounts. Current customers will be migrated seamlessly once they are available.

We will also be increasing resources on the Small and Medium plans as we have added more bandwidth capacity.

Since the release of CentOS 6, OpenVZ has modified the memory management model, replacing User Beancounters. This new method is called vSWAP and is what we will be offering to all new customers as a new standard.

It eliminates a lot of confusion between Guaranteed/Burstable memory models in the old system, and allows your VPS to behave in a more predictable way (more like a dedicated server).

Most of our customers have been migrated to the newer CentOS 6 nodes and vSWAP has already been implemented. If you have been migrated, the guaranteed RAM is what you will now see in your SolusVM interface and the burstable RAM will now show as SWAP within your VPS.

You can view how much SWAP you have allocated by typing the command:

# free -m

This is the official description for vSWAP provided by the OpenVZ Wiki:

New RHEL6-based OpenVZ kernel has a new memory management model, which supersedes User beancounters. It is called VSwap.

Now you can set two primary parameters:
physpages
and
swappages
, while all the other beancounters become secondary and optional.

physpages

This parameter limits the physical memory (RAM) available to processes inside a container.

The
barrier
is ignored and should be set to 0, and the
limit
sets the limit.

Currently (as of >= 042stab042) the user memory, the kernel memory and the page cache are accounted into
physpages
.

swappages

This parameter limits the amount of swap space which can be used for processes inside a container.

The
barrier
is ignored and should be set to 0, and the
limit
sets the limit.

The sum of
physpages.limit
and
swappages.limit
limits the maximum amount of allocated memory which can be used by a container. When physpages limit is reached, memory pages belonging to the container are pushed out to so called virtual swap (vswap). The difference between normal swap and vswap is that with vswap no actual disk I/O usually occurs. Instead, a container is artificially slowed down, to emulate the effect of the real swapping. Actual swap out occurs only if there is a global memory shortage on the system.

The problem 99% of the time, is the default route for IPv6 traffic is not present. By default, OpenVZ virtualization doesn’t seem to add the default route via the venet device unless specified by the user (unlike IPv4 behaviour).

The solution

Type the following command as root:

ip route add ::/0 dev venet0

While the above solution will work, it is not practical as most admins don’t want to manually type this each time they restart network services or reboot their machines.

To ensure the default route is present on boot. Add the following 2 lines of code to the /etc/sysconfig/network file.

NETWORKING_IPV6=”yes”
IPV6_DEFAULTDEV=”venet0″

This will ensure that your OS will add the default route for IPv6 on boot.
