BGP Feed to a VPS? Yes, we do that too

These days it seems that running a single VPS is boring. We’ve been getting requests as of late where clients are asking if they could get a BGP feed to announce some address space in an Anycast setup.

While these aren’t common / normal requests we just wanted to let everyone know that we can do that.

Networking in OpenVZ makes this a bit tricky, but we can do it with either a VPN session to get a link to our core, or via a GRE tunnel. The choice is yours.

$50 setup fee and 0$ per month will get your anycast setup going within 24/48 hours.

We’ve done it again! More resources at no additional cost

We’ve been busy provisioning new nodes and more SSD storage. While we were at it, we noticed that we wanted to give more RAM to our clients. When it came down to discussing pricing, we all concluded on the same thoughts. Free!

As of today, all existing clients will already notice the new resources on their server(s)!

Micro VPS

Goes from 128MB of RAM to 256MB

Small VPS

Goes from 128MB of RAM to 512MB ! (This is huge), we upped the port speed from 10mbit to 100mbit as well.

Medium VPS

Goes from 512MB of RAM to 1GB. We also increased the port speed to 250mbit from 100mbit.

Introducing the Nano VPS

While we were at it, we wanted to create a plan that’s perfect for developers to get started on our platform. We’ve introduced the new Nano VPS plan with 3GB of storage, 10GB of monthly bandwidth transfer and 128MB of ram (with 128MB vSwap). All for $15 /year! Our cheapest plan yet!

SSD Storage Is Here

I know it’s been a while since our last post. However, we have been taking the time to upgrade infrastructure. As of this post (August 24, 2014) we only have 2 X3400 INTEL nodes left with traditional storage. The rest of our VPS nodes are now upgraded to Intel E3 CPU bases and over 50% of those have SSD storage.

To give an example for what you will expect in disk I/O compared to the traditional storage:

~# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync

16384+0 records in

16384+0 records out

1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 2.78268 s, 386 MB/s

Typical sequential writes on RAID 10 SATA is around 80-100 MB/s. So most of our customers are already experiencing a 3x improvement on disk speeds.

We hope to eventually get our nodes up to exclusively SSD storage by the end of 2014 and early 2015. When that happens, we will be waiving the extra fee to be on an SSD node.

When you buy a new VPS with us, there is currently a 70/30 chance that you will be placed on an SSD node at no additional cost, however, until we are fully on SSD storage we cannot guarantee you will be placed on an SSD node unless the $2.50 /m addon is checked when you place your order.

How SSD Storage Makes Your VPS Faster

Samsung 840 PRO SSD on OpenVZ Servers

There has been a lot of buzz in the industry lately about SSD storage, the benefits to I/O speed that it brings relative to it’s cost is something that makes it an attractive investment for both business and personal use.

This post should clarify the common questions you’re faced with when deciding if the added cost of using SSD based storage is really something they should invest in.

The image below is a very simple (and standard) benchmark test used to see what the sequential write speed of your filesystem is. Typically speaking anything above 80-120 MB/s on this test is an indication of a filesystem powered by something more powerful than the typical 4 SATA drive RAID10 setup. In this case, the test below was the result of a two drive RAID1 setup with Samsung 840 PRO SSD drives. The theoretical maximum write on these drives is about 450 MB/s.

IO Test on Samsung 840 PRO

So what does this do for you? Well, knowing the read and write performance of your underlying file system can help solve problems and plan for future growth of your website, applications and or database performance. I/O is often the most commonly over looked parameter when sizing up a server to run in a production envoronment. The typical CPU, Memory & Disk Space are the common 3 factors that are used to determine a comparison in price point amongst hosting companies. Unfortunately, not many will post the I/O performance of the disk space that is sold.

Common Questions to Ask

  1. Are you running a web application that requires the use of a Database?
  2. Do you require a lot of storage space?
  3. Does your application or task do more reading or writing to disk?

Generally speaking, if you don’t need hundreds of gigabytes of storage space and you are using some type of database, SSD based storage will make a noticeable difference immediately. Most times, if you are on older hardware with SSD real world performance can actually greater than state of the art hardware that is experiencing an I/O bottleneck.

At OpenVZ.ca, SSD storage can be added to any existing or new plan at an additional cost of $5 /month. It will require a migration to another physical node setup with SSD storage, but this migration is seamless and results in no downtime.

ownCloud One-Click Install from SolusVM on OpenVZ VPS Accounts

ownCloud One Click InstallDue to popular demand, we have created an OpenVZ OS template based on Centos6 x86_64 that has ownCloud v 4.5 installed with a default version of Apache, PHP5 and SQLite.

Current, or new users can select this template from SolusVM under the “Re-Install” tab. Once completed, all you need to do is login via ssh, start Apache with “service httpd start” command and point your browser to the IP address of your VPS.

Some of the benefits of hosting your own cloud for files (like ownCloud) include:

  • Full control of your files
  • Secure server which you have root access to
  • Privacy
  • Eliminate DropBox
  • More professional
  • Keep your digital rights to photos

What does ownCloud allow me to do?

For starters, you can use it as a secure replacement for DropBox, and you can even password protect the URL’s you send to other users in-case the file is sensitive in nature.

You can upload any kind of file (up to 512MB per file) and access it from the web, through WebDAV, the ownCloud iPhone App, and the Mac OS X/Windows Desktop App.

It is a music player and video streamer (with supported addon enabled).

Bottom Line

You can have full control of your files, share them with your friends or collaborate with your clients if you are a small/medium business owner in a very simple tool.

The benefit of using it on an OpenVZ.ca based VPS, is that you can scale resources as you grow. Start out with the Small VPS package and go beyond the storage of ExtraLarge as you need it.

Ubuntu 11.10 CPU at 100% on Boot (Init Process) Bug

There is a bug in Ubuntu 11.10 running on OpenVZ that causes the CPU to spike to 100% shortly after booting.

To fix this issue without asking for assistance by an administrator, type the following commands as root:

# apt-get install python-software-properties
# add-apt-repository ppa:jammy/upstart.fix-880049
# apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
# reboot

Once your VPS has been rebooted the bug will go away.

This only affects Ubuntu version 11.10.

If you have any additional problems, or if this doesn’t fix the problem, please open a support ticket.

How to Ensure the IPv6 Default Route is Active On Boot

IPv6 World LaunchA common issue we notice is that users who have IPv6 enabled on their VPS have connectivity issues when rebooting. The problem 99% of the time, is the default route for IPv6 traffic is not present. By default, OpenVZ virtualization doesn’t seem to add the default route via the venet device unless specified by the user (unlike IPv4 behaviour).

The solution

Type the following command as root:

ip route add ::/0 dev venet0

While the above solution will work, it is not practical as most admins don’t want to manually type this each time they restart network services or reboot their machines.

To ensure the default route is present on boot. Add the following 2 lines of code to the /etc/sysconfig/network file.

NETWORKING_IPV6=”yes”
IPV6_DEFAULTDEV=”venet0″

This will ensure that your OS will add the default route for IPv6 on boot.
